Kenneth L. Gittens, better known as “Kenny,” was born in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands on June 3, 1971, to Doris L. (Williams) Joseph of St. Thomas, and Keith R. Gittens, Sr. (deceased) of St. Croix. “Kenny,” is a proud product of the public school system (kindergarten through senior high school). He attained his high school diploma in 1990 from the St. Croix Central High School and later that year joined the ranks of the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD).
During the course of his career, in 2000, he received an Associates of Science Degree in Police science and Administration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Continuing his educational pursuits, he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from the Columbia Southern University in 2008 and 2011 respectively. Additionally, he received numerous departmental and community service awards and medals for his outstanding service. These awards and medals include: Community Service Award - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (1993), V.I. Commendation Medal/Award - Governor Alexander A. Farrelly (1994), Exceptional Service Award - Virgin Islands Police Dept. (1998), Meritorious Award - Virgin Islands Police Dept. (1998), Humanitarian Award - Virgin Islands Police Dept. (1998), Recognized by the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association (2004), and Special Congressional Recognition - U.S. House of Representatives (2005) just to name a few.
From a young age, his ambition was indeed to serve his community; this he has done through exemplary service as a Police Pre-Cadet, Police Cadet, J.R.O.T.C Cadet – acting Command Sergeant Major, Head of School Safety Patrol and Student Council Representative. His love and admiration for his profession in the law enforcement and criminal justice fields for the last 20 plus years is immense. He has served diligently in the ranks of Police Auxiliary Officer, Police Officer, Police Detective, Police Corporal, Police Sergeant, and Police Lieutenant; and in the positions of 1st Executive Security Director – V.I.P.D., Acting Police Inspector, Special Assistant to the Police Commissioner and as a Fraud/Internal Investigator with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security within the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
During his professional career, he simultaneously continued his community service through touching the lives of our youth in the community: St. Patrick’s School Drill Team Coordinator, Police Athletic League Instructor (& C.H.S. Drama Club), Police Pre-Cadet Program Advisor, Youth Conservation Corps (Senior Cadre) V.I.N.G., and Spearheaded & Organized a Youth March-Rally Against Violence.
Senator Gittens is an active or former member of the following organizations: Cub Scouts of America, Boys Scout of America, National Law Enforcement Explorers Association, National Governor’s Security Association, John Jay Student Alumni Association, Gentlemen of Jones, Inc., Retired V.I. Law Enforcement Officers Organization, Law Enforcement Supervisors Union Board Member, Peace Officer Standard Training (POST) Council Member, Vice President of the St. Croix Festival Committee, and Presenter – Parent University for the Department of Education.
Senator Gittens has one daughter, Shonneth A.Q. Gittens, and is an active member of the Friedensberg Moravian Church where he was baptized and confirmed.“
