Summary Findings

The Gittens surname is still not appearing in the 1820 US Federal Census. One striking consistency is the absence of the Gittens surname from 1790 through 1820 in the US Federal Census.  I think this consistency is fairly strong evidence that the Gittens surname had not come to the United States by 1820.  There were 39 families with a variant of the Gittens surname, or a similar surname, included in the 1820 US Federal Census.  The surnames and their residences are tabulated below.
